The Western Journal

The core function of this position is to produce content that captures the attention and maximizes the engagement of users on social media. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with strong attention to detail, a passion for the truth and a meticulous approach to work. We want people who are passionate about what we stand for. This role will require working either Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday. Occasional other weekend or evening work will be required from time to time as The Western Journal offers live coverage of some events, such as presidential debates, elections, news conferences, etc.


  • Crafts shareable, engaging social posts on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to promote our stories, commentary, videos, and news
  • Collaborates with editorial staff to select content for publishing on the basis of relevance, value to the reader, and timing
  • Uses analytics software to identify the effectiveness, engagement, and reach of social media posts both in real time and after the fact
  • Identifies potentially “viral” videos and other content that match our editorial goals, and curates these on our site, always keeping in mind our mission and audience
  • Optimizes titles for increased engagement on social media platforms
  • Integrates social media into the editorial process, i.e. embedding social media within published content
  • Follows social trends and new platforms to help guide the comprehensive social media strategy
  • Collaborates with Assignment & Video Editors on original video ideas, including interviews and original content
  • Contact sources via phone, email, or through social media for comments and original interviews


  • No vaccination requirement
  • Experience building audience engagement on social media
  • Interest in and knowledge of current events, news and politics a big plus
  • Interest in new social media platforms and a desire for constant experimentation
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Self-starter attitude
  • Previous experience working in a newsroom a plus
  • Exceptional internet research skills to investigate claims made by social media users
  • Experience with WordPress or other CMS a plus
  • Experience with platforms like Twitter, Flipboard, and LinkedIn a plus
  • Understanding of the values and the mission of The Western Journal and willingness to promote and uphold these both at work and with potential partners, readers, and subscribers
