The core function of this position is to write headlines and arrange content in a way that captures the attention and maximizes the engagement of the audience on the website and through email. We are looking for an incredibly creative individual with strong attention to detail and a passion for current events. This role will require working a Monday through Friday schedule. Occasional weekend or evening work will be required from time to time as The Western Journal offers live coverage of some events, such as presidential debates, elections, news conferences, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Constantly watch The Western Journal website to track what stories are being published.
  • Use Google Analytics to track what stories are performing well.
  • Write engaging headlines for The Western Journal homepage.
  • Use editorial judgment and analytics to determine story placement on the homepage.
  • Set trending categories on the homepage.
  • Determine which topics to displace on the homepage.
  • Ensure timely posting of breaking news to homepage and update as needed.
  • Write short and clickable headlines for breaking emails throughout the day.
  • Determine which stories should be sent as breakings.
  • Run The Western Journal’s push notifications for readers.
  • Track analytics on a daily basis to learn how content is performing.
  • Constantly look for ways to innovate and pitch ideas for growth.

Qualifications:

  • No vaccination requirement.
  • Must have excellent knowledge of current events and politics.
  • Exceptional written communication skills.
  • Experience with WordPress a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of conservative political sphere including key players, elected officials, narratives, and current events.
  • Previous newsroom experience a plus.
  • Understanding of the values and the mission of The Western Journal and willingness to promote and uphold these both at work and with potential partners, readers, and subscribers
  • Self-starter attitude.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Team player.
