Job Description

The core function of this position is to work with our Assignment team to write and produce news articles for our website. This position will include some news aggregation and curation, as well as more in-depth original reporting (usually, but not exclusively, on issues local to Arizona), including interviews, attendance at newsworthy events and government meetings, etc. Because The Western Journal publishes content seven days a week, this position requires weekend and holiday availability. Responsibilities

  • Pitch unique, original stories that will inform readers and drive page views
  • Keep informed on the current news cycle, including U.S. elections, domestic (especially Arizona) and international affairs, and other relevant topics as required for reporting
  • Construct logical arguments to support truth in honest and accurate reporting
  • Fact-check statements, data, evidence, and other elements to support claims in reporting
  • Accept feedback from the editorial team and apply new knowledge to writing for our highly engaged audience
  • Research and analyze a variety of topics through open-source material, data, interviews, and other source material
  • Cultivate a network of contacts who can provide tips, informed comments, and other material for news stories
  • Write content catered to our audience
  • Ensure that all writing is accurate and objective
  • Work with the broader content team to brainstorm and generate ideas for stories
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Strong ethics, time management and organizational skills
  • Keen interest in current events and politics (news junkie)
  • Ability to interact positively with colleagues and field contacts
  • Ability to adapt to the inherent changes of a rapidly evolving and growing company
  • Passion for writing and a firm grasp of grammar, punctuation and standard American English usage
  • At least basic familiarity with social media, especially Facebook and Twitter, as used by online media companies
  • Familiarity with Phoenix city and Arizona state government is a plus
  • Four-year degree in journalism or related field is preferred
  • Experience with digital photography is a plus
  • Experience with WordPress or other CMS is a plus
  • Experience writing for a print or online news outlet is a plus
  • Knowledge of AP Style is a plus
