We are looking for a highly motivated individual with very strong attention to detail, a passion for the truth and a meticulous approach to work. This is a Monday through Friday position, but some weekends will be required, as are occasional later evenings for coverage of special events. Examples could be the president’s annual State of the Union address, news conferences, election coverage, etc. Occasional travel, generally not more than a few days each year, may also be required.

This position reports directly to the editor-in-chief.

Managing Responsibilities:

  • Monitors performance of story editors and freelance writers; may also assist in reviewing other metrics at request of the E-in-C
  • Works with E-in-C to develop company and team goals
  • Cascades organizational goals into personal goals for each team member
  • Works with Recruiting as needed to identify and hire new interns, employees and freelancers
  • Hires and trains freelance writers and editors in addition to full-time story editors; may assist in on-boarding employees in other functional areas
  • Terminates freelance writer contracts based on performance
  • Fills in as needed because of position vacancies, sick time, PTO, etc.
  • Ensures strict adherence to Ethics and Editorial Guidelines
  • Shares strategic vision and goals with Story team at regular and ad hoc meetings
  • Reviews PTO and other time-off requests and adjusts schedules as necessary to ensure adequate Story coverage
  • Monitors quality and quantity of freelancer output and revises assignments to maintain required publishing schedule
  • Meets with Story team at least bi-weekly to address concerns, changes, issues, etc.
  • Meets with peer team (Team One) at least bi-weekly and brings team decisions or questions back to Story team
  • Meets with each Story team member at least bi-weekly to set goals, monitor progress, address concerns, coach, etc.
  • Represents Story team at monthly TWJ staff meetings and quarterly LMI company meetings, as needed
  • Maintains regular and reliable contact with Story staff and freelance writers and editors through email, Slack, video conferencing and face-to-face meetings

Editing Responsibilities:

  • Proofreads published articles for factual accuracy, grammar, spelling, conformance with House Style Guide, tone and voice, etc.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on some video products and memes
  • Identifies recurring editorial issues and reviews with staff; provides training as necessary
  • Provides feedback to freelance and in-house writers on writing quality
  • Manipulates media embeds and featured images
  • Check social media headlines and share text for accuracy
  • Fill in as story editor as workload and staffing require
  • May occasionally write a high-priority breaking story or other content when amount of published content is unexpectedly low, or as desired as time permits

Other Responsibilities:

  • Works with Facebook and Facebook’s third-party fact checkers to remove fact checks from published content as required
  • Reviews and responds to reader comments, questions and suggested corrections
  • Makes appearances on “WJ Live” and other media as required
  • Regularly collaborates with Assignment, Distribution, Reporting and Video teams
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with Firefly,, etc., as required


  • No vaccination requirement
  • 5+ years of relevant newsroom experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Government or Political Science (preferred)
  • Very strong written English skills, including good spelling and grammar
  • Understanding of the values and the mission of Liftable Media, Inc. and willing to promote and uphold these both internally and with potential partners, readers and subscribers
  • Good investigative and critical thinking skills
  • Good networking skills
  • Disciplined ability to work to deadlines and strong work ethic
  • A meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail
  • The ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate
  • Proven ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings as necessary
  • Familiarity with The Associated Press Stylebook
  • Familiarity with online content management tools (WordPress or basic HTML) a plus
